About this site
Architecture Walks is a personal, independently run site that lets you find Japanese buildings worth visiting on a map. It is built as a tool for deciding where to go next, filtered by architect and year of completion.
How the information is gathered
Every building here is chosen and entered by hand. Nothing is collected automatically, and completeness is not the goal. Buildings are added slowly, on the basis of whether they are worth seeing as architecture.
Pin positions and Google Maps Place IDs are resolved through Google's Places API. Typing coordinates by hand hides mistakes, and a map that is quietly wrong is worse than no map.
Photographs come from Wikimedia Commons and are served from this site's own storage. The photographer and licence are shown on each building's page.
Names, architects, years, awards and links to official sites and Wikipedia are entered from publicly available sources.
Please keep in mind
- Accuracy and completeness are not guaranteed. Awards and descriptions in particular have not all been checked against primary sources.
- Public access is not indicated. Private houses, buildings requiring advance booking, and buildings whose interiors are normally closed are all included. Always check the official site before visiting.
- Opening hours, closing days and admission fees are not listed. They change quickly, and stale information would do more harm than none.
- A pin marks a representative point, not necessarily the entrance or reception. On large sites the building itself may be several hundred metres away.
- No responsibility is taken for decisions made on the basis of this site.
About the map
The map is powered by Google Maps. Displaying it causes your browser to connect to Google's servers. See the Privacy policy for details.
How to use it
- Tap a pin to see a summary of that building below the map. Tap again to open its page.
- Use Filter to narrow by architect, type, area, year of completion, and whether the building has received an award.
- The list below the map shows the same results, and can be operated with a keyboard and screen reader alone.
